01. Time it against your billing cycle
Storage facilities almost universally bill monthly in advance, and most won't prorate a refund if you move out mid-cycle. Check your renewal date before scheduling anything — clearing the unit a few days early to hit that date is free money compared to paying for a month you don't use.
If you're behind on payments and the facility has threatened auction or lien sale, call them directly before booking a cleanout. Many will work out a short extension once they see you're actively emptying the unit, which is cheaper than losing the contents to auction.
02. Sort in place before you haul anything
Storage units are dense by design, so sorting in the unit itself — rather than hauling everything home first — saves a step. Bring a friend, prop the door, and work front to back: keep, donate, sell, haul.
This matters more for storage units than garages because a lot of what ends up in long-term storage was already decided to be 'maybe keep' once. Be honest about whether you've thought about that box since you paid to store it. If the answer is no, it's a haul candidate.
03. Know what actually drives the haul-away price
Storage unit cleanouts price almost entirely on unit size and how full it is, since access is usually straightforward — no stairs, no long carries, just a roll-up door and a hallway. A 5x5 unit that's packed floor to ceiling can cost more than a half-empty 10x10.

Inherited storage units are one of the more emotional cleanouts we run, and the advice we give every family is the same: take photos of everything before it leaves, even things you're certain you don't want. It's a fast, free way to create a record in case a sibling or executor asks later what was in there.

05. Don't pay to move it twice
A mistake we see often: someone rents a truck, hauls everything from the storage unit back to their house 'to go through it properly,' and then calls us two months later to haul most of it away anyway. If you're fairly sure 70% of a unit is going to the dump either way, sort in the unit and skip the double move.
The exception is genuinely valuable or sentimental items mixed in with junk — furniture worth reselling, or boxes of photos and documents. Those are worth a short trip home even if the rest goes straight to the trailer.
06. Book the haul for the same day as your final walkthrough
Most facilities require an empty, swept-out unit at move-out, sometimes with a manager walkthrough before they close your account. Scheduling the haul-away for that same morning means you walk out with the unit closed and no return trip needed.
