01. The four types of appliances and how they're handled
Every appliance hauled in Phoenix falls into one of four disposal paths, and the path determines both the cost and the environmental outcome:
- Freon appliances (fridges, freezers, window ACs, dehumidifiers): refrigerant capture by an EPA §608-certified technician, then metal is scrapped.
- Large non-Freon appliances (washers, dryers, dishwashers, ranges): scrap metal recyclers — usually recovers 60–80% of the appliance by weight.
- Small appliances (microwaves, toasters, coffee makers): mixed e-waste stream to an R2-certified recycler.
- Water heaters: separated into tank (scrap) and burner assembly (hazmat) at the transfer station.
02. The Freon rule (and why cheap haul quotes cheat on it)
Federal law requires a certified technician to capture refrigerant from any appliance before the metal is crushed or landfilled. That capture step costs a legitimate hauler $20–$45 per unit. When you see a $75 fridge-haul quote on Craigslist, the math doesn't work — the corner being cut is almost always Freon capture.
The consequence isn't just environmental. Uncertified refrigerant release is a federal violation with fines up to $37,500 per day per appliance under the Clean Air Act. If a hauler is caught, the paperwork trail often leads back to the homeowner who booked the pickup.
03. SRP and APS rebate programs
Salt River Project (SRP) runs an appliance recycling program that will pay you $30 to $50 to recycle an old, working second fridge or freezer — and they pick it up for free. The catch: it has to be a working unit that's been in your home for at least 6 months, and it has to be a second unit (not the primary kitchen fridge).
APS runs a similar program with $30 rebates on working second fridges and freezers in their service area. Both programs are designed to pull energy-hog older units out of use — a 1990s garage fridge can burn $150+ per year in Arizona summer utility costs.
If your fridge is broken or you need it gone this week, the utility programs don't apply — that's when full-service hauling makes sense.
04. What appliance haul-away actually costs
In the Phoenix metro in 2026, expect roughly these ranges for legitimate, EPA-compliant appliance removal:
- Single fridge or freezer (Freon capture included): $99–$149.
- Window AC or dehumidifier: $75–$99.
- Washer or dryer (each): $75–$99.
- Dishwasher (disconnected): $75.
- Water heater (drained, disconnected): $99–$129.
- Range or oven: $75–$99.
- Bundle of 3+ appliances: usually 15–25% off the individual sum.
05. Prep that saves you money
Two things you can do the day before that reliably shave $25–$50 off an appliance haul:
- Disconnect and drain the appliance yourself (water line for fridge and dishwasher, gas line for range — call a plumber if you're not sure).
- Move it to the garage or driveway if you physically can. Second-floor and basement appliances take a second crew member.
- For fridges: empty completely, wipe out, prop the door open with tape for 24 hours.
- For washers: run a spin cycle to drain remaining water.
- For water heaters: shut off gas or breaker 24 hours prior and let it cool.
06. When to repair vs. recycle
The rough rule: if the repair cost is more than 50% of a replacement AND the unit is more than 8 years old, recycle. Modern appliances are dramatically more efficient — an Energy Star fridge from 2024 uses about 40% less electricity than a 2005 unit, which in Arizona summer terms is $100+ per year in savings on the fridge alone.
The exception is high-end appliances (Sub-Zero, Wolf, Viking) where a $600 compressor swap can extend the life of a $12,000 fridge by another decade.
